Organ Trafficking in China

According to Reuters, police in China have shut down two clinics participating in sale and transplantation of human kidneys.  Reuters and Xinhua, China’s state news agency, report that buying and selling of human organs is widespread in China despite efforts to better regulate facilities providing organ transplants.  Xinhua states, “Reports about illegal transplants indicate there appears to be a large underground network profiting from the country’s demand for donor organs.”  Last month, police arrested three Shandong-based physicians for “illegally harvesting human organs”.
