ABC Radio Australia has a brief but informative exchange with Dr. Dean Shuey, Team Leader for Health Services Development at the World Health Organization. According to Dr. Shuey, widespread misuse of antibiotics is leading to drug resistance and needs to be addressed through a multi-prong strategy. Dr. Shuey recommends that patients ask their doctors whether antibiotics are truly necessary when they are prescribed. He also supports better use of antibiotics by health care providers, better training in the use of antibiotics, prescription-only access to antibiotics, improved quality-control over production of antibiotics, rational prescribing, greatly reduced use of antibiotics in animals raised for human consumption, and support for research into development of new antibiotics.
